Sexual reproduction involves interactions between individuals that in some ways resemble social interactions. For example, sexual reproduction involves the union of two separate genomes, one from each gamete (sperm or egg).
The main evolutionary theory for analyzing social interactions is kin selection theory. I consider how far we can extend our understanding of the evolution of sexual reproduction using kin selection theory. I conclude that several facets of sexual reproduction make sense viewed in this way.
Examples include why male and female genes usually replicate equally and why males sometimes damage the long-term welfare of their female mates.
