In response to new Equality and Human Rights Commission research into 'baby boomers' expectations of ageism in later life, Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director for Age Concern and Help the Aged says:
'Baby boomers' are quite right to fear ageism, as our own research shows age discrimination is the most common from of prejudice experienced in Britain.(1)
'Support for the Equality Bill among older people and baby boomers is strong and it is vital the Bill passes without delay. But the Bill currently before the commons will not address all the concerns highlighted by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
'The current Bill does not propose to end the widely criticised national default retirement age. Nor does it contain a clear, legally binding commitment, to introduce the detailed rules needed to rid the health service or finical services of age discrimination. Unless these rules are brought in, older people will continue to face unfair treatment.'
