The American Diabetes Association is challenging riders to take part in the annual Tour de Cure, a cycling event to raise funds to help fight diabetes. More than 40,000 cyclists will be participating in the Tour de Cure at sites throughout the country. All funds raised at the Tour de Cure events will go to support the Association's mission -- to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Individuals and teams composed of co-workers, family and friends are taking the ride of their life by helping raise funds for the nearly 24 million Americans with diabetes. Tour de Cure is designed for anyone from the occasional to the experienced cyclist with routes from 10-mile family rides to 100-mile century rides. The route will feature rest stops with food to fuel the journey and volunteers to cheer riders on.

"Tour de Cure is a ride for any individual or team who wants to enjoy a great day of cycling and change the future of diabetes," said Phil Southerland, founder of Team Type 1. He has been participating in the Tour de Cure since 2006 along with his team of professional cyclists who plan to visit 40 Tour de Cure events this year. "It is our goal to inspire others to use cycling as a way to stay healthy. You don't have to be a professional cyclist to get healthy and take control of your diabetes. Together we can help find a cure for this deadly disease which affects so many people and have fun doing it," he said.

National sponsors for Tour de Cure include Gold's Gym, Performance Bicycles, Splenda and Sun Crystals. National Teams include AT&T, Gold's Gym, Johnson & Johnson, Valero, Dignity Memorial, and Wal-Mart/Sam's Club.
