The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) honored 41 doctors as "Exemplary Psychiatrists" at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) annual conference in San Francisco today.

"We are proud to honor 41 psychiatrists from across the country for their exceptional dedication to people living with mental illness," said NAMI executive director Michael Fitzpatrick. "These doctors go above and beyond in their support of individuals and families, mental health advocacy and public education."

The annual "Exemplary Psychiatry Awards" honor psychiatrists who have "gone the extra mile" in their commitment to excellent care, reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness and working closely with NAMI members in their communities.

The awards have special significance because honorees are nominated by individuals and families who are directly affected by mental illness.

Support for the awards program is provided by AstraZeneca and Janssen Pharmaceutica.
