The MS Society Scotland has backed a school boy from Glasgow whose campaign aims to seek support for the use of vitamin D in helping to prevent the onset of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Ryan McLaughlin's campaign 'Shine on Scotland' was launched in April 2009 after the MS Society announced that research funded by the charity had discovered vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy and the early years could potentially increase the risk of developing MS later in life.

Ryan's mother has MS and the 14 year old launched the campaign in an effort to help prevent future generations developing the condition.

The campaign has three aims:

- to encourage the Scottish Government to provide vitamin D to all of Scotland's children and pregnant mothers

- to seek clarification on the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D

- to run a public awareness campaign to inform people of the benefits of vitamin D in relation to MS

An e-petition has been launched and Ryan is now seeking to recruit over 500 children willing to march the Royal Mile in Edinburgh on June 16 to Scottish Parliament to hand in the petition.
