The physical challenges and demands of participating in competitive high school marching band are similar to those experienced by athletes who compete in sports, according to a study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine's 56th Annual Meeting in Seattle.
Gary Granata, Ph.D., R.D., studied 172 members of the Avon (Ind.) High School marching band, the Grand National Champion at the 2008 Bands of America competition. Through an anonymous questionnaire, band members reported fatigue, muscle soreness, and injuries, commonly associated with competitive sports and athletics.
"The visual design of today's marching band shows, influenced by competitive drum and bugle corps, places incredibly high physical demands on the individual performer," Granata said. "Performers are constantly moving, and often running, at velocities that reach 180 steps or more per minute while playing instruments that weigh up to 40 pounds."
More than 95 percent of surveyed band members reported muscle soreness or stiffness after practice, and nearly half said they were "frequently tired" after practice. In addition, more than 38 percent said they had suffered an injury as a direct result of participating in marching band.
"The wealth of research conducted on traditional sports has led to guidelines that help ensure the safety of participants and proper methods to enhance training regimens," Granta said. "Yet, minimal research has been conducted on marching band and drum corps. Thus, there is an opportunity to establish safety guidelines and effective training regimens for this strenuous physical activity that has rates of both participation and injury similar to competitive sports."

posted by Alex Williams on 6 Dec 2010 at 11:25 amFianlly! I'm a freshman in my marching band and everybody I tell to join says it's stupid, or they don't want to wear the uniforms. I tell them it's really fun, and that it's also a sport, and that's when they all go ballistic on me. Everyone who is not in it says it is not a sport when it really is and it's also very physically demanding.
yesss! Marching band
posted by melanie mason on 11 Jul 2011 at 9:40 amThank you very much. Everyone always says marching band isn't a sport and that its the easiest thing to do but its a lot harder then that you have to memorize multiple sheets of music, anywhere for 30 to over a 100 different positions, hit sets, and movements, it takes most of the summer and alot of after school practices not to mention how long the practices are with no brakes can you image repeated going over one spot in the music for two hours whole playing your horn expected to roll your feet stay in step watch your spacing watch the major and everyone leave on the same count at the same time? It's hard and competitive, its a sport get over it.
Finally!!
posted by Dylan on 10 Aug 2011 at 4:35 amI havew teachers and other students telling me that I'm an idiot for saying that marching band is a sport. We do just as much if not more than any other sport otu there.
Agreed!!
posted by Devon on 10 Aug 2011 at 8:35 amI have done marching band for 4 years, all through my highschool years and I agree that marching band should be considered a sport. Others who participate in a sport say marching band isn't nearly as tough and I know there are alot of tough sports but marching band is tough. You get tired, it puts you in shape and it can be a lot more vigorous and time consuming than other sports.
Marching band
posted by Varonica on 26 Sep 2011 at 10:13 amOMG! This is amazing. I am one who comes from a school where band is taken just for the credit. It's extremely agrivating because only about 1/5 of the band really cares. Everyone else sees it as a blow off. And, i came from an amazing marching band where we had around 5-9 directors. One for almost anything you could think of. Now, i'm in a school with one director who lets the kids have controle. So, most of the people here say that it's nothing because our band is laking. But, it's nice to see people do realize how hard marching band is.
YES!!! Marching bands and sports
posted by Sarah on 1 Nov 2011 at 12:09 pmI am writing a paper as to how marching band should be considered a sport, and this is perfect. I personally have been on both the guard and band part of marching band. This is awesome, people need to know how hard marching band really is...
YES!
posted by Jackie on 25 Jan 2012 at 5:20 amI've been in marching band for officially 5 years and I'm in guard. People say that marching band is not a sport and is for sissies. I mean they praise the football team and other sports teams more then the marching band. They don't have celebrations when we win ACC's (which we did back to back), which is more then what could be said for the football team. I believe that people need to start respecting the sport of marching band and recognize us. (Not to mention that our band got further then the football team this past season lol) So respect the band! YAY BAND (GUARD) WOO HOO
yes
posted by Summer on 5 Feb 2012 at 3:01 pmMarching practices as hard maybe even hard than a football team and we use the field as much as the football players too
