Psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist John, Lord Alderdice will apply a psychoanalytic perspective to the issues of fundamentalism, radicalization and terrorism at a lecture to be held at the Institute of Psychoanalysis on Friday 12 June 2009, 7.00pm.

Lord Alderdice has devoted his working life to the application of psychoanalysis to the cause of peace and has been influential in the promotion and establishment of peace in Northern Ireland.

He will talk about the way the events of September 11 2001 have led to the phenomena of fundamentalism, radicalization and terrorism becoming fused in the public mind, partly under the influence of the political and military reaction described as the 'War or Terrorism'.

While there is clearly an important overlap in the religious thinking of some fundamentalists, the political agenda of many radical groups and the violent activities of those who use the tactics of terrorism in certain current circumstances, confused thinking is rarely helpful in addressing such profoundly difficult and dangerous matters.

Lord Alderdice will apply a psychoanalytical approach to clarifying the boundaries and overlapping elements in these three phenomena, in the hope that such thinking will permit a more reflective response to these clear and present dangers.

The lecture is organised by the Institute of Psychoanalysis' Centre for the Advancement of Psychoanalytic Studies.

John, Lord Alderdice is a psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist who has devoted his working life to the application of Psychoanalysis to the cause of peace. He has been highly influential in the promotion and establishment of peace in Northern Ireland, sits as a Liberal Democrat in the House of Lords, and holds a number of posts across the world devoted to Psychoanalysis and the understanding of political conflict and international terrorism.
