The journal Human Reproduction reports the results of a survey which shows that ART (Assisted Reproduction Technology) is now responsible for 250,000 babies being born worldwide every year. The IFFS (International Federation of Fertility Societies), which represents most of the world's fertility societies, has issued the following quote, which can be used as background material for any article on the Human Reproduction survey. This quote is embargoed to coincide with the Human Reproduction survey.

Professor Basil Tarlatzis (Thessaloniki, Greece), President of the IFFS (International Federation of Fertility Societies) said:

"This is good news, we welcome the report, and the findings that assisted reproduction is increasing, worldwide. The report highlights the different access to ART in different countries, and the variable success rates. The IFFS has a global education programme which aims to promote lower cost, but effective ART in countries with limited resources, and we've recently staged several workshops in places such as Iran, Tunisia, and China. This report shows that this work needs to continue.

At the same time, we are concerned to see the continued high incidence of multiple pregnancy, and we support the trend to reduce the number of replaced embryos".
