Dr Alexis Willett, Head of Policy & Involvement at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, says:

"Women tell us that waiting for a diagnosis is extremely distressing regardless of the outcome. Breakthrough is pleased that almost all breast units are seeing patients who are 'urgently' referred within two weeks, however, by the end of 2009, both urgent and routine referrals should be seen by a specialist within this timescale. We would also like to know how long patients are currently waiting for 'routine' referrals and be reassured that this deadline will be met."
