Vitamin D levels in the body at the start of a low-calorie diet predict weight loss success, a new study found. The results, which suggest a possible role for vitamin D in weight loss, were presented at The Endocrine Society's 91st Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

"Vitamin D deficiency is associated with obesity, but it is not clear if inadequate vitamin D causes obesity or the other way around," said the study's lead author, Shalamar Sibley, MD, MPH, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota.

In this study, the authors attempted to determine whether baseline vitamin D levels before calorie restriction affect subsequent weight loss. They measured circulating blood levels of vitamin D in 38 overweight men and women before and after the subjects followed a diet plan for 11 weeks consisting of 750 calories a day fewer than their estimated total needs. Subjects also had their fat distribution measured with DXA (bone densitometry) scans.

On average, subjects had vitamin D levels that many experts would consider to be in the insufficient range, according to Sibley. However, the authors found that baseline, or pre-diet, vitamin D levels predicted weight loss in a linear relationship. For every increase of 1 ng/mL in level of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol - the precursor form of vitamin D and a commonly used indicator of vitamin D status - subjects ended up losing almost a half pound (0.196 kg) more on their calorie-restricted diet. For each 1-ng/mL increase in the active or "hormonal" form of vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol), subjects lost nearly one-quarter pound (0.107 kg) more.

Additionally, higher baseline vitamin D levels (both the precursor and active forms) predicted greater loss of abdominal fat.

"Our results suggest the possibility that the addition of vitamin D to a reduced-calorie diet will lead to better weight loss," Sibley said.

She cautioned, however, that more research is needed. "Our findings," she said, "need to be followed up by the right kind of controlled clinical trial to determine if there is a role for vitamin D supplementation in helping people lose weight when they attempt to cut back on what they eat."

The National Institutes of Health, the University of Minnesota, and the Pennock Family Endowment at the University of Minnesota funded this study.

weight loss after starting vit d intake

posted by james hunter on 20 Mar 2012 at 5:30 pm

I started a moderate diet reduction on Nov 15th 2011 and up till xmas of that year very little loss of weight. In january of 2012 was recommended to take a daily dose of vitamin D of 2400 IU for arthritis. from then on there has been a loss of around 5 to 6 pounds per week! until then I had no idea there was any debate concerning vitamin d and weight and went on to find out more. I am convinced the Vitamin D has helped in my weight loss of 2 & a half stone till now (march 20th). I am just amazed this is not being shouted from the rooftops by Docs everywhere!!! In case yur intersted I live in Glasgow, Scotland.

posted by Cindy on 11 Nov 2011 at 6:45 pm

I had a 25hydroxyvitaminD level done and it was 8 (normal 30-100). My doctor started me on 50,000 units every Sunday and after just 1 month, I felt like I had lost weight after having been unsuccessful losing weight for years and have a lot to lose and so I weighed this morning and I had lost 15 pounds in a month without even trying. . . I think there is something to this.

I moved to Texas 6 years ago from Arizona. The first year I got here I gained 50pounds. I am now 60 pounds over weight. I have gone back to Arizona several times and always loose weight when I am there. I was there for 2 weeks last time and lost 9 pounds. No matter how much I diet I can't take off the weight and have medical problems as a result. I read an article at work about vitamin D and plan to prusue this theory about vitamin D. It makes complete sence to me. I will stay in touch with the results that I plsn to see.
Thanks!

IIncreading Vitamin D has been a HUGE help to me!

posted by Helen on 22 Aug 2010 at 3:13 pm

I just googled "vitamin D" +"weight loss" and came upon this article. I truly believe there is a connection. I upped my Vitamin D intake via supplements and extra milk at breakfast several months ago after noting to my doctor that my constipation problem was much better after drinking more milk and he said in passing that it was probably the Vitamin D. So after hearing that, I started adding a supplement every day. My natural nails which were NEVER long and strong (I always had to wear acrylics) are now long and strong and hard for the first time ever. No more constipation problems (which has plagued me all my life). I'm a gastric bypass patient having had the surgery in 2001 but still have a large amount of weight to lose yet. So I take two multivitamins a day for that, but added extra Vitamin D and I've noticed the past month that I've lost 5 pounds without trying (stressful summer with my husband on dialyis and my son being autistic). So we'll see how the future leads in terms of weight loss. I sure hope so!!

Vitamin D Deficiency May Aid In Weight Loss

posted by Kathy on 13 Jul 2009 at 12:58 pm

I have been recently diagnosed as having insufficient levels of Vitamin D. Or as my doctor put it" dangerously low" level of the vitamin. So, I have been searching for any indication of my recent weight gain and inability to drop the weight. I could almost do a study on this myself, soon after starting on a supplement of 50,000 iu's per week, I also started a low calorie diet of 1100 calories per day. The most perplexing changes that occurred in my body was the amount of belly fat that I carry, never carried my weight here. I have noticed a steady drop of about 1 1/2 lbs. per week now. I must mention that I have Fibromyalgia and advanced osteoarthritis. I am only 42 yrs old. Knowing this may have contributed to my condition(s) is almost a relief. I would hope that testing for a vitamin D level would become more common place for health care practitioners.
