Swinton Commercial is advising social welfare organisations including care homes, nurseries, shelters and youth centres to check they are adequately covered by their insurance policies in advance of upcoming market changes.

In April 2009, the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the Heathcare Commission and the Mental Health Commission merged to form the Care Quality Commission which could have a significant impact on insurance arrangements required within the social welfare sector.

These latest changes follow the Corporate Manslaughter Act which came into effect last year. The act, which applies to a wide range of UK organisations including care homes, NHS bodies, GP partnerships and out-of-hours providers, means organisations that cause death by gross negligence are now liable for prosecution, making adequate insurance essential.

Swinton Commercial, which recently launched its social welfare insurance product and works with some of the UK's leading social care insurers, is advising organisations to seek advice in light of these new changes.

Alastair Denness, Swinton Commercial Regional Manager said: "These latest industry changes indicate there is a real requirement for organisations to have full Professional Indemnity cover.

"Now would be a good time for anyone in the social welfare arena to get their insurance checked to make sure they are sufficiently covered. We are aware that some current insurance policies may fall short of what is required and would recommend organisations seek advice from their local broker."
