Police are investigating the suicide of an academic who pioneered treatment for multiple sclerosis but could no longer live with the disease herself.
Cari Loder, 48, a former university lecturer, killed herself at her Surrey home by inhaling helium gas that she had ordered over the internet.
She had also purchased a hood online and had acquired a suicide guide called Final Exit.
Commenting on the sad news, Helen Yates, Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre Chief Executive said, "It is terribly sad news that Cari felt she no longer had a life that was fulfilling enough to carry on. She offered great hope to people with MS at a time where many felt that there were few choices for them to help ease their MS symptoms. Cari was, without doubt, a pioneer in this field and her death is a great loss to the MS Community as a whole. Her family are in all our thoughts at this difficult time"
Detectives believe Loder may have received help and arrested a 70-year-old neighbour soon after her death on June 8. The man was later released on bail.

I Wish I Had The Nerve To Do The Same.......
posted by Andy on 21 Aug 2009 at 10:55 amIf it wasn't for the wife and grand kids I would do the same as cari (fellow MS sufferer) as I feel I am coming to the end of the road, my health is I feel getting worse and as there does't seem to be anything to help me apart from my close family I just want to bring it to an end. Am I being selfish? some days it's so hard to go on. I'm sitting still writting this letter and it's the best I've felt all day...... I cant do it to my children or grand kids to remember a close family suicide of their grandad, I cant do it to them, I am afraid that one day I will.

MS
posted by karen on 11 Jan 2011 at 1:01 amI have relapsing remitting MS. I believe in God and the Devil. God created us pure. The Devil created sickness. The end is I dont feel your pain and loss. It is a private course. I feel pain but at times nothing and things ok. I do feel I am having a fight to live with myself. Dont blame yourself. We are not born for the lose of our body. It is hard work when the body does not react in control. We are born to live. So give yourself little pleasures. Like meeting with family, going out for dinner. This is not the answer but you deserve a break and peace.
Your not being selfish to end your life but we have many roads to travel in life. My father left us with no food, money for another woman when I was 8yrs old, that was the worse point in my life and my mother went crazy too. I remember the heart break, pain. I am still here.
Thanks for talking. Its not easy to do. I believe there is a cure for everything. Doctors not find it yet. Blah blah..I know.. there is lots to think of.

You do what you want but give it careful thought. One minute at a time Andy. What a courageous individual who fights on for others.
Peace be with you
