The release of a new study examining the role of Tibetan herbal formula PADMA in immune-related functions reports supportive results for EcoNugenics®¹ PADMA BASIC®. PADMA was found to effectively suppress the human body¹s fluctuating levels of neopterin, an immune system marker, and tryptophan, a mood regulator.

Austrian researchers have found that the anti-oxidative properties of PADMA are closely linked to the modulation of immunobiological events. These results are on par with similar studies on the anti-oxidant properties of resveratrol, red wine, and green and black tea.

Elevated levels of neopterin, a substance that is present in the body fluids, indicate that the immune system has been activated. High neopterin levels signal the presence of malignant disease, viral infections and rejection from grafts. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid in human nutrition, and plays the important role as the precursor of melatonin and seratonin, known for their important roles in mood regulation, as well as numerous health conditions.

The effects of the PADMA formula were observed in stimulated and unstimulated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), a type of human blood cells, in vitro. PBMC rates of neopterin production and tryptophan degradation were measured and were ultimately inhibited by the PADMA formula. The study concludes that the PADMA formula is able to suppress immunobiological events in mitogen-treated PBMC.

The authors point out that the clinical relevance of the study was of particular importance for people with conditions in which macrophage activation by interferon, an antiviral protein produced in cells which have been invaded by a virus, is involved.** PADMA's ability to interfere with oxidative stress is important for these conditions, as well as its effects on neopterin and tryptophan levels, particularly for patients with malignancy, infections or autoimmune diseases.

³Elevated neopterin levels may indicate the presence of malignant disease or viral infections, and low tryptophan levels show a reduction in essential amino acids,² states Isaac Eliaz, M.D., L.Ac., chairman of EcoNugenics® and medical director of Amitabha Medical Clinic and Healing Center. ³The ability of PADMA to keep these immunobiological levels in check is an important finding in relation to the benefits that are found in the U.S. PADMA formula.²

PADMA is a multi-compound Tibetan herbal formula that consists of 22 compounds: 20 herbal ingredients, camphor and calcium sulphate. Additional studies have suggested that the PADMA formula may be effective in supporting the immune system, promoting healthy circulation and improving cardiovascular and vein health. PADMA is sold as a drug and as a nutritional supplement in Europe. The same PADMA is sold in North America, distributed by EcoNugenics, as PADMA BASIC.
