Royal College of Physicians President Responds To The Public Accounts Committe Report Into Health Services For Harmful Drinkers, UK
Main Category: Alcohol / Addiction / Illegal DrugsArticle Date: 30 Jul 2009 - 3:00 PDT
Responding to the publication of the Public Accounts Committee's report Reducing Alcohol Harm: Health services in England for alcohol misuse, Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians said [of the report]:
"It clearly demonstrates that the delivery of alcohol policy locally has been uncoordinated and muddled, and the effect on those particular interventions left unevaluated. The Government must now focus on better policy coordination and a clear mandatory framework rather than voluntary partnerships with industry. Above all it must prevent harm and drive down overall consumption through introducing a minimum unit price for alcohol."
Notes
1. As well as being President of the Royal College of Physicians, Professor Ian Gilmore is also Chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK.

By Incompetence Or Design? UK Alcohol Policy
posted by Peter O'Loughlin on 31 Jul 2009 at 1:55 amPtofessor Gilmore has characteristically identified the muddled thinking and conflicts of interest regarding our alcohol policy, the outcome of which is ever increasing alcohol related problems, not only among so called binge drinkers, but an increasing number of people who are drinking more than they intended to.
The lack of clarity in the policy regarding the inherent dangers of alcohol which can and does cause as many if not more problems than smoking, including mental problems indicates that either the government is lacking the will and determination to ensure that the alcoholic drinks industry is made to conform to appropriate health warnings in the same way as the tobacco industry was, or they are incompetent to the point that they are either unaware of the dangers, or so negligent that they choose to disregard them.
