Obama Honors Justice Sotomayor At White House Reception

President Obama on Wednesday held a reception at the White House in honor of newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Roll Call reports. During the reception, Obama praised Sotomayor's achievements and thanked members of Congress for their efforts in securing her confirmation (Koffler, Roll Call, 8/12).

Audience members included several Hispanic lawmakers, other members of Congress and supporters, and first lady Michelle Obama (Youngman, The Hill, 8/12). Obama thanked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), and Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.) for their work in Sotomayor's confirmation (Roll Call, 8/12).

"Republicans and Democrats tore down yet one more barrier and affirmed our belief that the doors to opportunity must be open to all," Obama said (The Hill, 8/12). Sotomayor said that "it is this nation's faith in a more perfect union that allows a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx to stand here now" (Silva, Chicago Tribune, 8/12).
