Recording continuing professional development hours is getting easier this summer. A new part of the General Dental Council's eGDC website has now gone live.

GDC registrants can use the online facility on eGDC to track and record CPD hours over their five-year cycle at the click of a mouse. The site shows how many hours they have to complete, and re-calculates this when further hours are added.

All registrants can log on and use the facility but it's only dental care professionals who registered with us on or before 31 July 2008 who must submit their annual return by the end of September. They will get a letter in the coming weeks with instructions on how they can log on to the eGDC website and fill in their annual CPD hours electronically. The envelope will also contain their Annual Practising Certificate and a return form which they may choose to fill out instead of using the online facility.

Sarah Arnold, GDC Registration Development Manager, said:

"Keeping up to date is a fundamental requirement of GDC registration. But we realise that it's not always easy for busy dental professionals to keep track of all their activities. The idea of the new part of the eGDC website is to help people get organised. Visitors to the British Dental Association Conference in Glasgow had the chance to test-drive it. We also consulted the Dental Technologists Association and it was discussed by our Registration Committee, which has representatives from different registrant groups. We hope that we've come up with something registrants will find useful."
