In its September issue, Marie Claire features profiles of two pregnant women who were faced with the decision of whether to have abortions in the second trimester after their fetuses were diagnosed with fatal conditions. One woman's fetus was diagnosed at 18 weeks' gestation with trisomy 13, or Patau syndrome, a genetic disorder involving multiple fatal abnormalities. The woman chose to carry her pregnancy to term, and the infant lived less than five hours. The other woman's fetus was diagnosed at 18 weeks' gestation with trisomy 2, a rare fatal chromosomal abnormality that can cause congenital heart failure, seizure, lung deformation or structural brain abnormalities. The woman chose to have an abortion rather than carry the pregnancy to term (Dominguez/Kohen, Marie Claire, September 2009).
