A new report, "Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern, Science, Spin and the Truth Behind Interphone," was released today by a collaborative of international EMF activists. Groups affiliated with the report include Powerwatch and the Radiation Research Trust in the U.K., and in the U.S., EMR Policy Institute, ElectromagenticHealth.org and The Peoples Initiative Foundation. Download the report.
The exposé discusses research on cellphones and brain tumors and concludes:
- There is a risk of brain tumors from cellphone use;
- Telecom funded studies underestimate the risk of brain tumors, and;
- Children have larger risks than adults for brain tumors.
This report, sent to government leaders and media today, details eleven design flaws of the 13-country, Telecom-funded Interphone study. The Interphone study, begun in 1999, was intended to determine the risks of brain tumors, but its full publication has been held up for years. Components of this study published to date reveal what the authors call a 'systemic-skew', greatly underestimating brain tumor risk.
The design flaws include categorizing subjects who used portable phones (which emit the same microwave radiation as cellphones,) as 'unexposed'; exclusion of many types of brain tumors; exclusion of people who had died, or were too ill to be interviewed, as a consequence of their brain tumor; and exclusion of children and young adults, who are more vulnerable.
Lloyd Morgan, lead author and member of the Bioelectromagnetics Society says, "Exposure to cellphone radiation is the largest human health experiment ever undertaken, without informed consent, and has some 4 billion participants enrolled. Science has shown increased risk of brain tumors from use of cellphones, as well as increased risk of eye cancer, salivary gland tumors, testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukemia. The public must be informed."
International scientists endorsing "Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern" include Ronald B. Herberman, MD, Director Emeritus, University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute; David Carpenter, MD, Director, Institute for Health and the Environment, University at Albany; Martin Blank, PhD, Associate Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, Columbia University; Professor Yury Grigoriev, Chairman of Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, and many others.

Missing The Main Risk
posted by Mike Brennan on 27 Aug 2009 at 9:03 amEVEN IF there is a link between cell phones and cancer (far from demonstrated), EMF is still orders of magnitude from being the main health effect directly attributable to cell phones. The most obvious is accidents caused by people being distracted by their phone when they should be doing something else. I'll bet everyone reading this has been in such an accident, or narrowly avoided one (or probably more). The death toll, to say nothing of life-changing injuries, is huge.
The second health effect is the ability to summon emergency help, almost instantly, almost anywhere. It would be almost impossible to calculate how many lives cell phones save, or greatly improve by decreasing negative situations.
In comparison to these, focusing cell phone EMF is like worrying if the emergency rations in the lifeboats on the Titanic were low-sodium.
Must Respectfully Disagree
posted by Janet on 31 Aug 2009 at 9:41 amCertainly the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle crash while on cell phone must be considered, it would be remiss to dismiss the increased risk of brain tumors and other cancer to children, who seem to spend a lot of time on cell phones. There are many still waiting for more definitive evidence of a link between cancer and smoking so, as far as being "far from demonstrated", this should send a signal to phone manufacturers to either address this problem or publicize this so parents can make an informed choice as to whether to remove or limit their kid's cell and portable phone usage. As of now, people young and old prefer the freedom of walk around phone conversing. If this practice a potential adverse impact on their health, the practice or the product needs to change.
Not Missing Main Risk
posted by carolyn on 31 Aug 2009 at 10:51 amI agree cell phones can save lives - and misuse of phones while driving, talking, and various other things can be extremely dangerous. However, I don't feel an article pointing out once again that there can be dangers involved is overlooking those dangers.
I am still laughing over your low-sodium content...although I don't think it really applies here.
There is a growing body of research showing that danger is coming from not only the cell-phones but all the other electrical devices around us...there's simply no way to get away from it as it's everywhere. I recently did some research and pulled together some articles on some of the other dangers and effects of EMF - I find the information compelling enough to cause me to look for solutions on how to protect myself. There isn't a definitive answer at this point - but I am simply not going to wait until I'm told it's too late and I'm dying from exposure. I'm doing what I can without giving up my phone.

Apples And Oranges
posted by Anon on 31 Aug 2009 at 1:00 pm@Mike Brennan, you are comparing apples and oranges. Just because driving and talking on cell phones is extremely dangerous does not make this a non-issue (or even a less important issue).
That is like saying in the 70s or 80s that toxic fumes from factories is so bad that the dangers of cigarette smoke is irrelevant.
How about the point that kids (who the last time I checked do not drive) are most susceptible to EMF radiation?
No Causal Link
posted by Erikthebassist on 31 Aug 2009 at 4:29 pmThis report does nothing more then point to correlations. There is still no causal link between microwaves or radio waves and cancer or any other ill health effects. Any claim to the contrary is pseudoscience. The problem with articles like this is that they put pseudoscience in the same playing field as science in the mind of the reader, which clouds the issue for further debate.
RF and microwaves are lower frequency wave lengths than visible light. If cell phones and radio towers cause cancer, then so do bright lights. The "EMR is harmful hypotheses" must first overcome basic physics and show some plausible mechanism by which the low frequency wavelengths can disrupt molecular action and DNA before we take all the correlative studies in the world seriously.
Thankful For Information
posted by TumorRecoveringPatient on 15 Nov 2009 at 2:49 pmOne year ago, I had a brain tumor removed. Threatening life and nerve damage, it is something I hope to avoid in the future. I had read several posted reports that cellphones do not increase risks, so I was surprised to find this one.
After major surgery, I went 6 months symptom free (yay!) and then started the "noise" and eye issues again. I am searching again, to avoid going through this past year all over, and I so appreciate someone being honest about this data. (My tumor was behind my right ear.)
I found another website, saying that cell phones do change DNA. The pictures of the 5yr old's brain and the 10 yr-old's brain versus the adult brain compared to the radiation make me want to keep cell phones from my kids (all under 12).
I am anxious to find out "blue tooth" and "wifi" information, since my car now uses my blue tooth so I can talk on my phone through the radio while driving. My mechanical engineering degree is old, but it seems those waves would be in my purse next to my phone, not next to my head which is better, but I'd like to see what the future science reveals.
God bless scientific research!
Turn Em OFF - Use ONLY In Emergencies
posted by MMEC on 25 Nov 2009 at 5:15 pmTitle says it all - turn em OFF. ONLY use in emergencies. We do NOT need to be continually on the telephone, nor do we continually 'need' to be using our mobile phones.
As for the apples and pears comparison (mobile phone use and accidents) the comparison is tosh. Specious nonsense. Bears NO relation to the matter in hand - 'use of mobile phones causes cancers' discuss.
Keep mobile phone use for emergencies ONLY. End of problem, end of story.
They Cause Cancer
posted by Lucan on 9 Oct 2010 at 4:18 pmCell phones EMF does cause cancer. I knew some one who drove celebs & rich people around - always using his cellphone. Guess what happened? he got brain cancer and unfortunately passed away.
There will be a lot of people out there who say "that's just a coincidence" or something along those lines.
But it's certainly not an isolated case - it's happening all over the world. I watched 60 minutes with a report about the link between cancer and cell phones. Top nuerosugeons say that the evidence is extremely frightening.
Cellphones most affect the area of the brain that makes rational decisions and the younger the person is, the worse the EMF penetrates the brain.
I think it's a bit selfish people who get wifi and expose other people to it. I just came back from my mates house where he has wifi and now i ache all over.
people say "it might/doesn't cause cancer" or "you are going to die anyway" because they don't want to go without their cellphones.
Conclusion: you may want to die early from cancer but I don't.
Lol WiFi too!
posted by freddyzdead on 20 Jan 2011 at 4:54 pmThat's a good one! Come home from somewhere WiFi is used and now I'm all achy. What horses***. WiFi is only a few milliwatts, around the same as your cordless phone. There is no conceivable effect on the body from such tiny amounts of RF.
I have worked with therapeutic diathermy units, which can put out as much as a couple of watts per square centimetre; but the thing about RF is the so-called "skin effect" which means that it doesn't penetrate through the skin. There is just no way it could get through the hard bony skull. Anyhow, the effects of RF are confined to local heating effects, which requires orders more power than is available in any cell phone.
CELL PHONES AND GBM
posted by pat knowland on 12 Aug 2011 at 7:29 amMy 33 yo stepson died from the effects of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). For those who insist cell phones can't possibly be related to brain cancer, please read on.
He was sick a little more than one year. It starts with headaches, then progresses to migraines. You'll then see the doctor, and find you have a portion of your brain infected. You try chemo and radiation, your hair falls out. The test results come back with hope. The cancer comes back. The tumor grows to a golf ball size overnight and surgery is required. The surgeon cuts away part of your brain. You go a month or so thinking it might be gone and then it grows amazingly fast and the headaches return. The surgeon goes in again, and removes another portion of your brain.
You are now sleepy all the time. You are losing your senses. It's harder to hear and your vision is much worse. You've been sick now 7 months. The headaches continue, and you see the surgeon again removes more of your infected brain. Your motor skill are depleated, your vision is now like looking through a straw. Over the next few months, the surgeries continue and you have minimal senses left.
You now are in hospice for a month. You can't do anything but wait. You die at about one year after diagnosis.
The health community owes it to society to be honest and forthright about brain cancer and cell phone usage. The money in the cell phone industry is staggering and the lobbyists control the politicians.
It's a shame you'll find out after it's too late. May God bless you and take care of your families when you're gone.
