The British Veterinary Association has secured a rare opportunity for vets across the UK to quiz the four Chief Veterinary Officers in a panel session at BVA Congress 24-26 September.

The theme of Congress 09 is 'Together forever?' looking back at 10 years of devolution for Scotland and Wales and looking forward to the opportunities and threats of the future.

In a session on the 2nd day of Congress (Saturday 26th September), entitled 'Who will take the high road?', BVA President Nicky Paull will chair a panel discussion between Nigel Gibbens (UK and Defra CVO), Simon Hall (Scotland CVO), Christianne Glossop (Wales CVO), and Bert Houston (Northern Ireland CVO).

The major topics for discussion are likely to be the implementation of responsibility and cost sharing and its impact on animal health and welfare across the four nations, the different approaches to disease control and eradication, welfare codes for different species, and the future of the profession.

Commenting, Nicky Paull, President of the BVA, said

"The Chief Veterinary Officers are our profession's closest link to ministers and civil servants so we should make sure they are taking the right messages to the Government.

"This session provides a unique opportunity for vets from all areas of practice to highlight the major issues affecting the animals they work with, their local area and the UK as a whole. It will also help us to iron out some of the anomalies of devolution and share best practice."

BVA Congress 09 is being held at the Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff, 24-26 September 2009.
