Diabetes UK Chief Medical Advisor Appointed

Dr Brian Karet has been appointed Diabetes UK Chief Medical Advisor (Primary Care), a newly-created position jointly sponsored by Diabetes UK and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).
In his new role, which will take up one day a week alongside his current position, Dr Karet will be the Chief Medical Advisor for Diabetes UK and the Clinical Lead for Diabetes for the RCGP. He will ensure that the Government, professional representative bodies, senior figures in the professions, and our 6,000 healthcare professional members, recognise that Diabetes UK is at the forefront of shaping the future of diabetes care and research with the purpose of ensuring the highest possible quality of care for people with diabetes.
Working with diabetes
Dr Karet has been a GP for 20 years works as a GP with Special Interest (GPwSI) in diabetes in Bradford, West Yorkshire. He is also a lecturer on the Masters Programme for GPwSI at the University of Bradford and has been involved in formulating the Diabetes Commissioning Toolkit, which provides advice for all commissioners of diabetes services.
He was also the lead clinician responsible for producing the Guidelines and Competencies for people with Special Interests in diabetes in conjunction with the Department of Health and RCGP. He has managed Bradford Primary Care Satellite Diabetes clinics, which look after complex cases of people with diabetes, for the past 10 years.
Delighted with the appointment
Dr Karet said: "I am absolutely delighted to be taking up this post which is sponsored by Diabetes UK and the RCGP. It is the first of its kind and I am very privileged. Diabetes is a serious condition that is affecting more and more people every day. I am passionate about making the best diabetes care available to everyone and this role will certainly support those efforts."
Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, said: "I am pleased that Dr Karet has been appointed in this role particularly in light of his extensive knowledge and understanding of diabetes. There are 2.5 million people with diabetes in the UK and this number is estimated to rise to more than 4 million by 2025 so it is vital that we have the best diabetes experts on board. Dr Karet will use his extensive experience as a leading clinician to take a leadership role in Diabetes UK's work with primary and secondary care health professionals in diabetes."
Dr Karet is married with two children and a large dog. He enjoys golf, running and loud music but not all at the same time. He has run several Great North Runs for Diabetes UK and has raised almost £5,000.
