The ANF today welcomed the appointment of Australia's chief nurse, Rosemary Bryant, to the new National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for 2009-2012.

ANF Federal Secretary Ged Kearney said the appointment of Ms Bryant and a number of other nurses and midwives to NHMRC committees is a well deserved recognition of the key role nurses and midwives play in the Australian health care system.

"The ANF is pleased with the strong nursing leadership represented on the NHMRC and various committees," Ms Kearney said.

"I congratulate all of the nurses and midwives appointed to collaborate with a range of health professionals on ensuring all Australians benefit from a robust investment in health and medical research."

The ANF would also like to congratulate the following new NHMRC committee members:

Australian Health Ethics Committee (AHEC) member Professor Margaret O'Connor AM. Professor O'Connor has held the Vivian Bullwinkel Chair in Palliative Care Nursing at Melbourne's Monash University for six years. The AHEC is a Principle Committee of the NHMRC.

NHMRC research committee member Professor Caroline Homer. Professor Homer is Professor of Midwifery and Director of the Centre for Midwifery, Child and Family Health at the University of Technology Sydney.

NHMRC health care committee member Professor Amanda Henderson. Professor Henderson is an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Associate Fellow and Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queensland's Griffith University. She is also Nursing Director, Education at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
