UroToday.com - Dr. Nagendra Mishra MS,DNB(uro) of Ahmedabad, India reports that Indian guidelines for interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome were announced at a meeting in which representatives of top teaching institutions from throughout India were represented. The meeting was held on June 21, 2009 at the Hotel Park Hyatt in Goa.

The syndrome was to be called IC/PBS. Recommended investigations include: Recommended management was incorporated into the following algorithm: The group plans to proceed with multicenter research in India to consolidate the consensus views in the guideline. They will study the sensitivity and specificity of the definition, the role of bladder biopsy, the role of urodynamics, the need for urine cytology, and the need for testing for genitourinary tuberculosis in the Indian population with this constellation of symptoms.

Preliminary results will be available next year. At that time the guidelines may be adjusted. The possibility of a shared Indian database of IC patients is being explored, and further cooperation with the international community is planned. The guidelines have not yet been formally published.
