Healthy eating habits that begin at home can be reinforced at school where students eat at least one meal or snack most days of the week. To make it easier for schools to implement the provincial government's Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC Schools, Dietitians of Canada worked with school chef instructors and home economics teachers to compile Tips and Recipes for Quantity Cooking: Nourishing Minds and Bodies. It includes over 75 recipes that meet the government's Guidelines plus tips on how to choose healthy recipes and how to make favourite recipes healthier.
"This resource demonstrates how to create and serve a variety of quality meals to students while following the Guidelines," notes Daniel Lesnes, Chef Instructor at Garibaldi Secondary in Maple Ridge and contributor to the resource. "I do not view the Guidelines as a limitation; rather they are an avenue to continue to produce delicious tasting healthy food."
"If it doesn't taste good, kids won't eat it. This resource includes recipes for foods kids are sure to like including Pasta and Pizza, Salads and Sides, and Baked Goods and Desserts, " says Janice Macdonald, Regional Executive Director of Dietitians of Canada, BC Region. A copy has been mailed to all middle and high schools and is available to download at www.healthyeatingatschool.ca
"One of the goals of ActNow BC is to improve healthy eating, with the specific target to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. We're pleased to see the collaboration between the Dietitians of Canada, teachers and other school staff to make available interesting, great tasting, healthy food that meet our government guidelines," says the Minister of Healthy Living and Sport, Ida Chong.
"Serving healthy foods to students at school supports their learning, health and development," adds Bobbe Wood, Chair of the BC Healthy Living Alliance.
