Social Psychologists Meet In Sheffield

Around 200 top psychologists from the UK and beyond will gather at The Edge in Sheffield from today, 15th September 2009, to discuss current research and issues surrounding individuals' thoughts, feelings and behaviour in the social world, at the British Psychological Society's Social Psychology Section annual conference.
Latest research and theories will be presented over the three day conference, including:
Professor Mark Griffiths from Nottingham Trent University will present the latest findings of his research into the prevalence of problem gambling in both online and offline gamblers.
Members of the NTU Cyberpsychology Research Group at Nottingham Trent University along with other will examine and discuss some of the current psychological problems, benefits and issues surrounding people's use of the internet.
Seeing a smile of approval can increase body satisfaction in people dissatisfied with their appearance through the well known psychological effect 'classic conditioning'. This is the finding of a study by Carolien Martijn and Marlies Vanderlinden from Maastricht University to be presented at the conference.
To minimize the risk of escalating conflict, police officers should treat demonstrators with respect rather than as potential trouble makers. This is one of the findings of Dr Michael Rosander and colleagues from Linköping University, Sweden who will present their findings today.
Dr John Drury from Sussex University will present the finding of a study, which examined the accounts of disaster survivors and found that individual survival in emergencies is not simply a matter of personal resilience, but is based on our connections with other survivors.
