Resonant Medical, an innovator in 3D soft tissue planning, image-guidance and adaptive radiotherapy products, headquartered in Montreal, Canada, announced that the Company is exhibiting the next generation of its Clarity System at the 23rd Annual Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology (CARO) being held in Quebec City, Canada.
The Clarity System provides the first cost-effective 3D soft tissue hybrid imaging product for advanced treatment planning, that is seamlessly integrated within a singular point-of-patient care in the CT Suite. Clarity also provides safe and gentle anatomy based image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) during daily radiation treatments. The exhibition of the Clarity System at CARO will help to educate the radiotherapy community about the use of hybrid imaging in planning for soft tissue cancer treatments. Resonant also hopes to raise awareness of the impact of lumpectomy cavity movement in the effective treatment of breast cancer. The Regional Cancer Program of the Sudbury Regional Hospital in Sudbury, Ontario, is the first cancer facility in Canada to clinically adopt the Clarity System to correct for the effects of lumpectomy cavity motion in their breast treatments.
"We hope to inspire radiation oncologists at the meeting to further examine the issue of breast cavity movement and accurate soft tissue cancer contouring during planning as part of the conferences' overall theme on improving the patient experience," said Tony Falco, founder and CEO of Resonant Medical. "Being a Canadian company, we are especially proud of the momentum and recognition of the issue and how it impacts patient care in the Canadian radiotherapy community. With the continued adoption of the Clarity System in Europe and the United States, we are very happy that the Regional Cancer Program in Sudbury is the first Canadian cancer facility to adopt the Clarity System for both prostate and breast clinical use. We hope to make the Clarity System available to an increasing number of Canadian patients."
The Clarity System is the first and only system that provides automatic hybrid imaging allowing physicians to compare CT and 3D ultrasound images acquired at the same time with the patient in the same position, which can dramatically improve the treatment planning workflow and accuracy when compared to CT alone. The Clarity System also provides 3D anatomy based IGRT by tracking daily changes in anatomy, relative to the reference plan, and correcting for any discrepancies just prior to beam-on thereby ensuring that the prescribed dose is delivered to the intended target while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Clarity's ability to segment anatomy and calculate changes in the target anatomy during each step of the patient flow from planning through treatment opens the door to true adaptive radiotherapy - something that was extremely difficult to do before Clarity became available.
"Our Regional Cancer Program is excited to offer this cutting-edge ultrasound technology to our patients," said Dr. Julie Bowen, head of Radiology Oncology at the Sudbury Regional Hospital. "Tumor and organ movement in soft tissue cancers is something that hasn't been adequately addressed in the radiation oncology community. Now patients and physicians can rest easier knowing that the radiation treatment is being delivered precisely where it is needed while sparing healthy tissue any unnecessary radiation."
About the Regional Cancer Program of the Sudbury Regional Hospital
The Regional Cancer Program has the mandate to provide a full range of cancer services to the people of northeastern Ontario. The program links together providers, patients, organizations and decision-makers from across the full spectrum of cancer care - namely prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and supportive and palliative care. The RCP is also recognized for its innovative cancer research, which remains an important component of the program.
