Summit Ear, Nose & Throat is the first in the area to offer an exciting new treatment for chronic sinusitis (CRS) in an outpatient setting called FinESS™ Sinus Treatment. FinESS is a new balloon sinuplasty technique that is less invasive than traditional sinus surgery and that breaks the cycle of chronic sinusitis with immediate relief and lasting results. Similar to angioplasty, a balloon sinuplasty technique uses a small balloon that is inserted into the sinus passages of the patient, the balloon is inflated, deflated, and then removed.
FinESS is effective and results in less pain, bleeding and recovery time for the patient and is performed in a relaxed outpatient setting. FinESS does not require the removal of delicate bone and sinus tissue and uses local anesthetic with or without light sedation. In most cases, patients are back to their normal routine within hours. Published clinical study results demonstrate that FinESS is an effective treatment that keeps treated sinuses open with significant quality of life improvements.
Gary Y. Shaw, MD, FACS of Summit Ear, Nose & Throat offers this innovative treatment for patients through two clinic locations in Lees Summit and Overland Park. "We are very excited to offer the FinESS balloon sinuplasty treatment as a new option for selected patients whose sinusitis symptoms persist or return despite antibiotics or nasal steroids, or who are looking for an effective minimally invasive alternative to traditional sinus surgery. Most procedures take 15 to 30 minutes and patients are able to return to normal activity almost immediately," said Shaw.
Gary Y. Shaw, MD, FACS is Dual Board Certified in otolaryngology and in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is a nationally recognized author of more than 35 published papers and 13 chapters. In addition to nasal and sinus disease Dr. Shaw specializes in voice and swallowing disorders, sleep apnea and snoring, and facial plastic reconstructive surgery in adults and children.

FinEss For Chronic Sinusitis
posted by Rudie Oelofse on 27 Oct 2009 at 12:43 pmGood article. Only hope it will be available in South Africa soon. My wife suffers from chronic sinusitis and already had a number of ops of which none helped except to damage her nose. Still has blinding headaches, blood inside her nose, and it seems to be raw all the time. She also had a lobectomy as a direct result from sinus problems. The medical profession here says that they cannot do anything more. We have tried all sorts of over the counter painkillers {for sinus} and nothing helps. Maybe this new procedure might help ??
