The winner of this year's BMA Primary Care Book Award is The Oxford Textbook of Primary Medical Care, principal editor Professor Roger Jones*.

The textbook, which is published by Oxford University Press (2003, £295) is a fully comprehensive guide to primary care including sections on practice management and clinical practice. Roger Jones is Wolfson Professor of General Practice and Primary Care at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine, London.

The book comes complete with a CD-Rom, which contains the full text of the publication.

The book was heralded by its reviewer as a "mouthwatering textbook" and "a joy to behold for everyone with a love of primary care."

Four highly commended books were also awarded prizes by the judges. 'Symptom Sorter 2nd Edition' by Dr Keith Hopcroft published by Radcliffe Medical Press (2003, £24.95) aims to provide GPs with an accurate guide to patients' symptoms. The book was praised for its excellent quality and 'top-tips' sections.

Family Violence In Primary Care edited by Dr Stephen Amiel and Dr Iona Heath published by Oxford University Press (2003, £32.50) aims to give GPs practical grounding in how to deal with the issue of family violence. Its reviewer said: "The authors have succeeded admirably in providing an outstanding guide to practical approaches that will be clear and helpful to all those likely to come into contact with family violence."

Primary Care in Urban Disadvantaged Communities edited by Professor Joe Kai and Professor Chris Drinkwater and published by Radcliffe Medical Press (2003, £27.95) looks at how primary care is responding to health inequalities in urban areas. Its reviewer said the book was "an excellent up to date review of efforts to improve public health through primary care driven initiatives."

Another award was made to Contraception: Your Questions Answered 4th edition by John Guillebaud published by Churchill Livingstone (2003, £23.99). Professor Guillebaud is Emeritus Professor of Family Planning and Reproductive Health, University College London. The book was described by its reviewer as an "updated classic [that] aims to be truly comprehensive."

114 prizes in total were awarded in the 2004 BMA Medical Book Competition with 24 first prizes and 90 highly commended prizes. There was a substantial increase in the number of entries this year with 524, up 12 per cent from 2003.
