New research into autistic spectrum disorder sufferers' special abilities in arts, music and poetry is just one of the fascinating topics that will be presented at the British Psychological Society's student lecture in London on 8th December 2009.

Students from all over the UK have the opportunity to attend the lectures from 10am at Kensington Town Hall, presented by some of the UK's top psychologists. These presentations include:

Dr Brett Smith from the University of Exeter will talk about the psychological challenges that face people who have suffered from spinal cord injuries based on real life experiences.

Dr Heaton from Goldsmiths College, University of London, a leading expert on perception and cognition in autism, will present 'Special talents in people with autism spectrum disorders'.

Europe's only Professor of Gambling Studies, Mark Griffiths from Nottingham Trent University, will discuss the growing view that behaviours such as gambling, sex, exercise, videogame playing and internet use are potentially addictive, in his presentation 'Slots of fun'.

Professor Richard Carson from Queen's University, Belfast, will discuss new developments being used to stimulate the brain after a stroke in: 'How can we bring a damaged brain back into action?'

Dr Catriona Morrison from the University of Leeds will argue that memory is what makes us human and helps us understand the world in: 'Beyond words and images in memory: using other senses to unlock our past and plan our future'.

Ruth Raven from the British Psychological Society said: "Psychology is relevant to everyone's lives. The topics up for discussion at the London lectures are incredibly interesting and we hope that many students will come along and enjoy them and go away with a better understanding of psychology, themselves, and others."
