The effect of music, the psychology of love, and just what make us human are some of the fascinating topics that Scotland's students can hear about at the British Psychological Society's student lecture on 17th November 2009.

Students from Edinburgh and beyond are invited to hear from some of the UK's top psychologists at the event, which is taking place at Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh from 10am on 17th November.

Dr Adrian North of Heriot Watt University will be asking what influence music really has on young listeners, considering the interpretation of lyrics and subliminal lyrics and investigating whether a link between music and suicide exists.

Dr Monica Whitty from Nottingham Trent University will be talking about self-presentation on dating websites, detailing her research into how people lie in their online profiles and the strategies that individuals use to attract others.

There are also talks from Paul Gardner of the University of St Andrews; who will present theories on the mechanisms that could explain why and how people fall in love; and Dr Carol Ireland who will talk about crisis negotiation in hostage situations.

Professor Charlie Lewis from Lancaster University will focus on his recent research on the development of children's social skills in answer to the question: 'What makes us human?'

Ruth Raven from the British Psychological Society said: "Psychology is relevant to everyone's lives. The topics up for discussion at the Edinburgh lectures are incredibly interesting and we hope that many students will come along and enjoy them and go away with a better understanding of psychology, themselves, and others."
