In an effort to educate the public about biotechnology, its numerous applications, and its most recent innovations, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) has created a series of educational web videos to answer many of the basic questions of biotech - "What is it?" "How does it affect me?" and "Where is it happening? - and provide insight into the myriad ways in which biotechnology is helping heal, feed and fuel the world. BIO produced the video series in close collaboration with Banyan Productions, a renowned video production company.

Hosted by Dr. David Targan, BioBytes endeavor to answer the most basic of these questions, with topics ranging from biotech therapies, to biofuels and the future of biomaterials. BioDigests go into greater depth with compelling, true stories of the companies, scientists, and entrepreneurs who are driving biotech innovation and the patients, farmers, consumers and many others who are benefitting from these breakthroughs.

"Research shows that few people truly understand biotechnology or are aware of its contributions to addressing some of the most pressing global challenges," said Jeff Joseph, vice president for Communications at BIO. "With the help of our host, Dr. Targan, and the many companies who have participated in the project, we are able to better tell the story of biotechnology today and its promise for the future. Increasing awareness and appreciation of biotechnology among the general public will help provide an environment more conducive to achieving our advocacy goals, introducing new technologies and promoting investment."

Both the BioBytes and BioDigest videos can be viewed on http://biotech-now.org/ - BIO's new social media website designed to educate and engage the public in the biotech discussion. New videos and other information will be posted on a weekly basis.

BioBytes' host, Dr. David Targan, is a practicing internal medicine physician with the Lankenau Hospital System based in the Philadelphia area and has a specialty in genetic testing. Dr. Targan holds a BS in chemistry from Lafayette College, and received his MD at the Philadelphia College of Medicine.
