The University of Pittsburgh Office of Health Sciences Diversity will host the Health Sciences Minority Alumni Banquet at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, at the University Club, 123 University Place, Oakland.
The featured keynote speaker will be former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Louis Sullivan, M.D. The banquet will celebrate the success of alumni and acknowledge the advancement of diversity and inclusion efforts in dental medicine, health and rehabilitation sciences, medicine, pharmacy, public health and nursing.
"Dr. Louis Sullivan's participation lends particular credence to our coordinated approach to diversifying the health professions for the purpose of addressing minority health disparities," said Arthur S. Levine, M.D., senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine.
The Office of Health Sciences Diversity seeks to create a diverse and inclusive environment that offers access and opportunity for diverse individuals within the Pitt Schools of the Health Sciences. To assist in the school's mission of closing the gaps in health disparities, and creating a health care work force that resembles the nation's fast-growing and multicultural population, Dr. Sullivan will describe the progress in diversifying our health care workforce, as well as share his thoughts on the current debate on health care reform in the United States.
Dr. Sullivan served as the first dean of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. His many years in medicine have influenced his belief that to improve the nation's health care system, a two-pronged approach is necessary: changing people's own health habits and fine-tuning the health care system.
