Hopkins Children's Ear Nose And Throat Specialist Receives Prestigious Award

David E. Tunkel, M.D., director of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Children's Center and associate professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has received the Distinguished Service Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS).

The award is bestowed to medical professionals in recognition of extensive meritorious service through the development and presentation of instructional courses, scientific research, leadership and their contributions to continuing medical education.

While Tunkel practices the entire spectrum of pediatric otolaryngology, his specific clinical interests include diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea in children, the surgical correction of laryngotracheal abnormalities and the treatment of chronic ear disease. His research interests involve new techniques for treatment of airway obstruction and sleep apnea in children.

Tunkel received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins, where he also completed his residency, and completed a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is one of the oldest medical associations in the United States and represents more than 12,000 physicians and allied health professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ears, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck.
