Aine Brady, T.D., Minister for Older People and Health Promotion, officially opened the Autumn Conference of the National Federation of Pensioners' Associations. The Federation aims to protect and promote the interests of pensioners and retired persons.
During the course of her speech, Minister Brady highlighted a number of items of interest to members of the Federation. These included the National Positive Ageing Strategy, Fair Deal, Patient Safety, and Cardiovascular Health, including Stroke.
Minister Brady reminded those attending the conference that the Nursing Homes Support Scheme, Fair Deal, will commence on 27 October 2009, and that Budget 2009 provided €55 million for the introduction of Fair Deal this year. Minister Brady went on to say that "the introduction of this scheme will provide peace of mind to one of the most vulnerable groups in society - those in need of long-term nursing home care - that such care will be affordable, and will remain affordable, for as long as they need it."
