New research claims that the Type 2 diabetes drug Liraglutide can also reduce weight in obese people who do not have diabetes.

The study looked at the effects of Liraglutide on bodyweight in obese people without Type 2 diabetes. The research was carried out in 19 locations across Europe, and looked at 564 people aged 18 to 65 years with a body-mass index between 30 and 40.

The participants followed a calorie-restricted diet and increased their physical activity throughout the trial. The study found that people on Liraglutide lost more weight than those taking a placebo or the weight-loss drug Orlistat.

More research needed

"It is already established that Liraglutide widens the choice of treatments for people with Type 2 diabetes as it offers not only improved blood glucose control but may also aid weight loss," said Caroline Butler, Care Advisor at Diabetes UK.

"However Liraglutide's role in aiding weight loss in obese people without diabetes is questionable and more research would need to be carried out before any conclusions are reached."
