The NMC's annual Midwifery Conference enjoyed another successful year on October 21 as women, midwives, supervisors and other healthcare professionals gathered to discuss current and future developments in the profession.

The popular event drew dozens of participants who enjoyed lectures on a range of topics and entered a lively Q&A session on improvements in care and other midwifery-related issues.

NMC Head of Midwifery Christina McKenzie said: "This year's event was a great success and we very much enjoyed being in Belfast. It was great to see everybody learning from each other about how they can improve care for women and their families. I know the audience particularly enjoyed the presentation by documentary photographer Leah Millinship on the journey through labour. Her photographs were a real reminder as to why many of us became midwives in the first place."

Other speakers explored topics including, working with vulnerable women, good and bad interactions between midwives and women and how supervisors can support women in their birth choices.

There was also discussion about the current review of the NMC's Midwives Rules and Standards, which will be under consultation from January next year. For more information about the project or other issues affecting the regulation of midwives visit the Midwifery section of our website.
