The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, and the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, today announced the appointment of Mr. Alwyn Child to the Hazardous Material Information Review Commission (HMIRC).

"I am confident that Mr. Child will be a great asset to the HMIRC Council of Governors," said Minister Aglukkaq, "His impressive career illustrates his versatility and ability to handle new challenges with great success. His continued engagement in the promotion of Canadian labour rights makes Mr. Child an ideal addition to the Council."

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Child," said Minister Ambrose. "The Commission will certainly benefit from his extensive knowledge and valuable experience in the fields of government policy and legislation, occupational health and safety, and injury compensation."

Mr. Child joins the organization after four year as the senior director of Occupational Health and Safety and Injury Compensation at Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). In this role, he provided national leadership on occupational health and safety issues, leading a number of important initiatives. These included the development and implementation of injury prevention policies, and of legislative and regulatory processes related to the Canada Labour Act and the Non-smokers Health Act. Additionally, Mr. Child led the creation of a national strategy for the prevention of workplace injuries, a project that improves labour rights for all Canadians.

Mr. Child has also dedicated much of his career to improving human rights in Canada , beginning in 1981 as an investigator for the Canadian Human Rights Commission, and eventually becoming the Director of Policy and Planning and International Programs.
