ACOG Joins Women's Cancer Campaign Network Television Special Airs Thanksgiving Day

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) joins the nation's leading cancer advocacy groups in a televised holiday entertainment variety special and education initiative called Kaleidoscope, aimed at recognizing women and the key role they play in the battle against cancer-as patients, caregivers, and advocates. The campaign's mission is to help foster proactive health decision-making among women and to celebrate survivorship.

"We know that one in three women will develop cancer in her lifetime. This year in the US more than 713,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with cancer; it will kill an estimated 269,800 women. These are devastating statistics of a disease that affects millions of women and their families," said ACOG President Gerald F. Joseph, Jr, MD. "ACOG is proud to be part of this national effort to raise awareness and to inspire action against the second leading killer of women in the US. We strongly encourage women to work together with their ob-gyn to understand how they can protect themselves against this disease."

The broadcast special will feature legendary Olympic champions and cancer survivors Scott Hamilton and Dorothy Hamill, who will skate to the music of fellow cancer survivor Olivia Newton-John and one of America's foremost music producers, David Foster. Also performing will be David Archuleta and Katherine McPhee of American Idol. Other prominent skaters include Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi, two-time Olympic medalist Nancy Kerrigan, and Olympic figure skating hopefuls Johnny Weir and Rachael Flatt.
