Politico on Friday examined how former Republican vice presidential nominee and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin "has transformed herself from a politician who was antiabortion into the leading figure of the antiabortion movement" since her return to the public spotlight after stepping down as governor in July. Many of Palin's public appearances in recent months have been at events for antiabortion-rights groups, including the Vanderburgh County Right to Life fundraiser in Evansville, Ind., and a Wisconsin Right to Life fundraiser in Milwaukee.
According to Politico, Palin's "continually evolving political identity" has subtly shifted during her book tour for her memoir, "Going Rogue," to increasingly focus on the presence of her 19-month-old son, Trig, who has Down syndrome. Antiabortion-rights supporters who back Palin say her decision to carry her pregnancy to term shows her dedication to the cause. Marjorie Dannenfesler, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, said that part of Palin's appeal to the antiabortion-rights movement is her decision "to bring him along with her" on her book tour and "feature him as a centrally valued person in their family" (Smith, Politico, 12/4).
