ASM Press announces the latest edition of its textbook Cellular Microbiology. Geared towards scientists and graduate students, the 2nd edition of this publication will serve as an invaluable reference for understanding this relatively new field of scientific research.

Coined in 1996, the term "cellular microbiology" identifies an emerging discipline that integrates the fields of cell biology and microbiology, highlighting the interaction between microbes and host cells. The advent of genomics, proteomics and postgenomics has resulted in more widespread understanding of the field of cellular microbiology among scientists. Cellular Microbiology, 2nd Edition, considers genomic information and advances in technology in an updated examination of this burgeoning area of research.

"As in the first edition, the chapters in this book contain information about fundamental cell biology and fundamental microbiology, as well as articles that show the marriage of the two - cellular microbiology," says Stanley Falkow of Stanford University in the book's foreword. "However, in this edition, the field has passed from its infancy to, well, at least puberty, with all of its attendant vigor, uncertainty and growing pains."

The second edition of this textbook offers five new chapters that comprehensively cover bacterial human pathogen genomes; structure and dynamics of the host cell membrane; study of prokaryotic biology using genome-wide approaches; cell biology of virus infection; and use of simple nonvertebrate hosts to model mammalian pathogenesis. All chapters are revised and organized like the first edition to provide fundamental details of each discipline along with the cellular microbiology aspects.

With individual chapters authored by foremost experts in their fields, Cellular Microbiology, 2nd Edition is edited by Pascale Cossart, Institute Pasteur, Paris, France; Patrice Boquet, INSERM, Nice, France; Staffan Normark, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden; and Rino Rappuloi, Chiron Vaccines, Siena, Italy. The book has a list price of $119.95 and can be ordered online at http://www.asmpress.org.

ASM Press is the book publishing arm of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. The ASM's mission is to promote research in the microbiological sciences and to assist communication between scientists, policy makers, and the public to improve health and foster economic well-being.
