The New York City Department of Health is holding a wrapper design competition for the "NYC Condom," which is given out at no cost to millions of people each year, the AP/New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. The department says that it is looking for a design that will "capture the city's distinctive culture while promoting safer sex."
The city's no-cost condom initiative is part of an effort to reduce the rates of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. The health department estimates that about 2,000 establishments in the city carry the lubricated Lifestyle-brand condoms.
According to the city, the winning wrapper design will appear on hundreds of thousands of the city's condoms and might be featured in safer-sex promotional materials. City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said, "We want to keep people excited about the brand, because we know that condoms protect health," adding, "This is every New Yorker's chance to help convey that message." The design cannot feature any copyrighted or trademarked materials or any explicit images. Any city resident ages 17 or older can submit entries through Jan. 22, 2010, and those younger than age 17 can enter with written consent from a parent or guardian. The finalists will be selected by the health department in February 2010, at which point the public will be allowed to vote online for the winning design (Kugler, AP/New Orleans Times-Picayune, 12/15).
