Comment from the Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr Tony Jewell:

"Whilst numbers of infections continue to drop we are now in the traditional flu season and I would encourage anyone invited to receive a swine flu jab to take up the offer.

"Last autumn we began offering vaccinations to those identified as being most at risk from the virus; namely pregnant women, people with chronic conditions and those with weakened immune systems or household contacts of people with weakened immune systems. Over 250,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered by GPs and other health professionals across Wales and 38,000 health and social care staff have had the vaccination through occupational health services.

"Phase 2 is now underway inviting healthy children between the age of 6 months and 5 years to attend their GP clinics. We are strongly encouraging groups in Phase 1 and 2 to get the jab as the benefit will last for several years during which time the H1N1 virus will still be in circulation"
