The HIV and Sexual Health Commissioners Group for England strongly welcomes today's launch of new sexual health standards, which will help commissioners fulfil essential components of World Class Commissioning.

Rosie Gagnon, Chair of the HIV and Sexual Health Commissioners Group for England, said; "I cannot emphasise enough how important these standards are as an essential tool for commissioners across the UK. They bring together existing guidance and address relevant issued raised in Progress and Priorities -working together for high quality sexual health. Review of the National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV (Medfash,2008) and proposals in Lord Darzi's final report to the NHS Next Stage Review (DH,2008) to support us in commissioning effective services.

Sexual Health is atypical in that the general public does not really know what to expect from the service. These standards seek to address this through identifying the clinical standards and ensuring meaningful public and service user engagement, as well as enabling commissioners in delivering against those expectations and measuring outcomes."

She added: "The launch of the standards is timely after the 2010/11 Operating Framework placed quality as the new organising principle of the NHS, and the Secretary of State demanded action this year from PCTs to make the necessary investments to enshrine quality in the final year of real growth."
