Nancy Crawford To Lead AHA's Section For Maternal And Child Health

Nancy Crawford, senior vice president of Medical Staff Services for Woman's Hospital, in Baton Rouge, La., is the 2010 chair of the American Hospital Association's (AHA) Section for Maternal and Child Health. The governing council is a 15 member body comprised on CEOs and senior executives from the nation's women's and children's providers. As chair, Crawford will lead the section's governing council on public policy issues concerning women and children's health, hospitals serving that patient population and AHA member service strategies.

Crawford has over 35 years of health care management experience, serving the last 30 years at Woman's Hospital. Currently she oversees organizational responsibility for a wide range of matters, including, but not limited to, health information management, maternal fetal medicine, clinical quality and data analysis, infection control and safety and medical staff services.

She began her health care career at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La., as assistant director of Health Information Management. Later she joined Woman's Hospital as director of Health Information Management.

Woman's Hospital is a non-profit women's and infants' hospital and the largest independently owned women's hospital in the country. More than 8,000 babies are born at Woman's Hospital each year - 18 percent of all babies born in Louisiana. Woman's Hospital annually performs 40,000 mammograms, 95,000 pap tests, and provides Level III Regional Neonatal Intensive Care services in its 82-bed unit. Most recently, Woman's Hospital was named by the Office of Emergency Preparedness to coordinate the evacuation of all high-risk neonates from the New Orleans and Lake Charles areas during hurricanes Katrina, Rita Gustav and Ike.

Nancy is very active in civic and professional organizations at the national, state and local levels. Currently she serves as treasurer of Council of Women and Infant Specialty Hospitals (CWISH) with previous two-year terms as both vice president and president. CWISH is an organization of 12 non-profit, high volume perinatal centers, which collectively represent over 125,000 births annually. Statewide, she is a member of the Louisiana Health Information Management Association and a recent graduate of Louisiana Leadership (a program for selected statewide leaders committed to improving Louisiana).

Locally, Nancy is a 1996 graduate of Leadership Greater Baton Rouge (a program for selected local leaders committed to improving the overall quality of life in the ten parish area and sponsored by the Greater Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce.) She served as president of the Greater Baton Rouge Leadership Alumni Association in 2004 and is currently serving on a committee to establish a leadership program for the ten parishes in the capital region. Nancy has also been a volunteer for the Capital Area United Way (CAUW), serving as a member (2000 -2007) and chairman (2007-2009) of the Community Partnership Committee-Building Healthy Communities and was appointed to the CAUW Planning Committee for 2005 - 2009.

Nancy graduated with high distinction from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is a Registered Health Information Administrator.

Jack Ludmir, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. will serve as chair-elect and will assume the role of chair in 2011. John Duval, chief executive officer of Medical College of Virginia Hospitals of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Va., is the immediate past chair. Current AHA board member, Kathleen Stanford, RN, DBA, senior vice president and chief nursing officer for Catholic Health Initiatives in Denver, Colo. was appointed as the 2010 Board Liaison to the Council.

Also elected to three-year terms (expiring in 2012) on the governing council:

- Martha G. Enriquez, MS, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer at University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz.
- John Iacuone, MD, MBA, executive director of The Children's Hospital of SW Florida and Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Myers, Fla.
- Maribeth McLaughlin, Chief Nursing Officer & Vice-President of Patient Care Services at Magee-Womens Hospital University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

About the Section for Maternal and Child Health

AHA's Section for Maternal and Child Health supports women's and children's hospitals as they build systems of care to improve the health status of their communities. The Section is guided by a governing council composed of leaders representing some of the country's leading hospitals and maternal and health providers.

Governing council members serve as elected representatives of their member peers. They advise the AHA on member service strategies, public policy issues, advocacy positions, and emerging issues, as well as serve as a channel back to the maternal and child health field.
