The Senate voted 97-0 Wednesday to confirm Beverly Baldwin Martin, President Obama's nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, which oversees Alabama, Florida and Georgia, CQ Today reports. Martin, a district judge in Georgia since 2000, was nominated in June 2009. Although Martin had the support of her two home-state Republican senators -- Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson -- her confirmation had been delayed since September 2009 over partisan bickering.
Democrats say Republicans have been moving slowly on Obama's nominees as payback for 2003 and 2005 Democratic filibusters of President Bush's judicial nominees. Republicans maintain that the pace of confirmations is consistent with previous years. Two nominees for district court judgeships -- Edward Milton Chen and Louis Butler -- were returned to Obama at the end of 2009 and are expected to be re-nominated shortly (Nylen, CQ Today, 1/20).
