Risk of ischaemic stroke in people with migraine: systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies - BMJ Online First.
Migraine sufferers are twice as likely to suffer a stroke than those who don't experience migraines, according to a report in this week's BMJ.
In the first review of its kind, researchers in Canada and the US looked at 14 studies which investigated an association between stroke and migraine.
They found that the risk of stroke for migraine sufferers was 2.16 times that for non-sufferers.
Those who have interrupted vision from light affects (aura) with their migraine were at slightly higher risk than those without; 2.27 times as likely to suffer a stroke compared to 1.86.
Three of the studies showed that women migraine sufferers who are also taking the oral contraceptive pill were up to eight times more likely to suffer a stroke than those not taking the pill. Though these results were at odds with other studies which suggest a smaller degree of increased risk for women in this category - indicating the need for much more research in this area.
The increased risk of stroke is probably down to the reduced blood flow to the brain which usually occurs in a migraine, suggest the researchers.
Migraine is the most common form of headache in young adults, with as many as a quarter of women in their mid to late thirties suffering the condition. The link between migraine and stroke established in this review raises new questions about whether these two conditions share similar risk factors, which must be further researched. In particular, much more investigation is needed into risk factors for migraine sufferers who are taking oral contraceptives, they conclude.

Migraines and Stroke
posted by DORIS on 7 Jun 2006 at 11:39 amI am a 42 year old woman, on april 16th 06 I had had a major migraine. As I was playing a great game of poker with family, my head started to hurt, felt like a simple headache coming on. But then my nose started to burn. then it got to the point where I could not take the burning in my nose and my headache became a migraine, to the point it hurt to have my eyes open or even move.
I excused myself from the game and took some asprin and went to bed. Went to the doctors the next day thinking it was allergies. So did the doctor who gave me allergy meds. I took them as perscribed . Then on 4-22 went to get out of bed and fell to the floor not thinking much of it. I felt fine, then on 4-23 again went to get out of bed fell to the floor but know finding it hard to walk moving my leg felt like it weighed 100lbs. not thinking much of it went to dinner and movies hard to walk but thought maybe it was a pinched nerve. 4-24 could barley dress my self. drove to work could not seem to control my car very well. kept going to left unless i held the steering wheel with my right hand. got to work called my doctor office went in they then sent me for a mri got sent back to dr office where they then called a ambulance. said i had a stroke i now can not move my left arm or leg, spent 3days in the hosp 4 wks in theropy now have every thing back but i now have headaches all the time. they are not sure what acually caused it. I think it was the migraine. now afraid of having another stroke. how do know if your having one? what signs do you watch for?
