American Diabetes Association Welcomes Newest Volunteer Leader To 2010 Research Foundation Board Of Directors

The American Diabetes Association, the nation's largest and leading voluntary health organization in the fight against diabetes, is pleased to announce the newest member of its Research Foundation Board of Directors for 2010 Kenneth Moritsugu, MD, MPH of Falls Church, Virginia.

Moritsugu, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, is the current Chairman of the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institutes and Vice President for Global Strategic Affairs of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Diabetes Companies. Moritsugu had a 37 year career in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service. He was the Acting Surgeon General of the United States in 2002 and 2006-2007, in addition to serving as Deputy Surgeon General to Dr. David Satcher and Dr. Richard Carmona.

With a diverse medical background, Moritsugu has provided consultation in health professions and systems development in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Germany, Mexico, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, as well as across the United States. Over the course of his public health career, Moritsugu has received numerous awards, medals and honors, including the Surgeon General's Medal for Exemplary Service, the Surgeon General's Medallion, and the Distinguished Service, the Meritorious Service, the Outstanding Service, and the Commendation Medals of the US Public Health Service.

Diagnosed with latent type 1 diabetes in 2000, Moritsugu is a vocal advocate for diabetes prevention, care, and health literacy (Moritsugu was featured on the cover of Diabetes Forecast in 2007). He now resides in Virginia with his wife, Lisa Kory and daughter Emily.

Founded in October 1994, the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation was created to substantially accelerate the Association's ability to raise major gifts to directly fund diabetes research. Over the years, the Association has invested over $500 million and provided funding for more than 4,000 research projects, with a continuing emphasis on training new investigators and pursuing novel strategies for curing, treating and preventing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Te American Diabetes Association Research Foundation has invested millions of dollars in diabetes research, funding hundreds of researchers nationwide at leading research institutions in the country.

The mission at the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation is to ensure the availability of funds necessary for the full exploration of all the scientific possibilities that diabetes research is generating.
