Top experts and researchers in psychiatry will present cutting-edge research and important clinical updates at the American Psychiatric Association's 2010 Annual Meeting in New Orleans in May.
The APA's 163rd Annual Meeting, the world's largest psychiatric meeting, will run Saturday, May 22 to Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. APA President Alan F. Schatzberg, M.D., identified strengthening the scientific program at the Annual Meeting as one of his top priorities, and he has worked with the Scientific Program Committee to recruit prominent speakers, including:
-- Nora Volkow, M.D., director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., Deputy Director, White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, headlining the NIDA-sponsored track;
-- Francine Benes, M.D., of Harvard, whose work in neuroscience has furthered our understanding of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder;
-- Daniel Weinberger, M.D., a senior investigator at NIMH, whose lab work focuses on basic neurobiological and genetic mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disorders;
-- Karl Deisseroth, M.D., of Stanford University, whose pioneering research in optogenetics is opening new ways to study brain circuits in vivo, and
-- Eve Johnstone, M.D., of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, who has more than 30 years of biological psychiatry research.
"My goal is to foster pride in our profession and to highlight the science that brings hope to people suffering from debilitating illnesses," Dr. Schatzberg said in introducing the theme of the meeting, "Pride and Promise: Toward a New Psychiatry."
The program will feature 10 prominent lecturers, 75 continuing medical education courses, five master courses, more than 300 educational sessions, and more than 700 new research posters. The meeting also includes:
-- A DSM-5 Track that brings the latest information on the development of the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, due out in 2013.
-- Ken Duckworth, M.D. (medical director, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation's leading grassroots mental health advocacy organization) presents his Patient Advocacy Award lecture.
-- MindGames, a live Jeopardy-like game, pits three finalist residency program teams against each other in demonstrating their knowledge of psychiatry.
-- CME Media Workshops include Isn't All Horror Psychological with Steve Schlozman, M.D., and director George Romero (1968 classic Night of the Living Dead) analyzing the film Repulsion.
-- Jesse Wright, M.D., Glen Gabbard, M.D., and others share insights on the best evidence-based psychotherapies.
Special educational tracks in a number of topic areas including psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and child and adolescent psychiatry have been created to make it easier for attendees to follow a subspecialty or clinical area.
