Essential oils usually used in aromatherapy have been found to kill the deadly MRSA bacteria according to research carried out at The University of Manchester, UK.

Tests revealed that three essential oils killed MRSA and E. coli as well as many other bacteria and fungi within just two minutes of contact. The oils can easily be blended and made into soaps and shampoos which could be used by hospital staff, doctors and patients in a bid to eradicate the spread of these deadly `super bugs'.

Researchers are now desperately looking for funding to develop their work and carry out a clinical trial. Peter Warn from the University's Faculty of Medicine who worked on the research said: 'We believe that our discovery could revolutionise the fight to combat MRSA and other `super bugs', but we need to carry out a trial and to do that we need a small amount of funding ' around Ł30,000.

'We are having problems finding this funding because essential oils cannot be patented as they are naturally occurring, so few drug companies are interested in our work as they do not see it as commercially viable. Obviously, we find this very frustrating as we believe our findings could help to stamp out MRSA and save lives,' added Peter, who is based at Hope Hospital.

Essential oils are chemical compounds found within aromatic plants, which the plants use to fight off infections. Researchers tested 40 essential oils against ten of the most deadly bacteria and fungi. Two of these oils killed MRSA and E. coli almost instantly, while a third was shown to act over a longer period of time, meaning that any soaps or shampoos made by blending these three oils would be effective over a period of time.

Jacqui Stringer who is Clinical Lead of Complementary Therapies at the Christie Hospital instigated the research and said: 'The use of plants in medicine is nothing new but some people regard the use of essential oils as unconventional. Our research shows a very practical application which could be of enormous benefit to the NHS and its patients.

'The reason essential oils are so effective is because they are made up of a complex mixture of chemical compounds which the MRSA and other super bug bacteria finds difficult to resist. The problem with current treatments is that they are made of single compounds which MRSA relatively quickly becomes resistant to, so treatment is only successful in around 50% of cases.

'While a wide range of products currently exist to help prevent the spread of MRSA these are often unpleasant for patients as their application can cause skin irritation. MRSA is often carried inside the nose which means that patients often have to insert treatments up their nostrils, whereas these essential oils can simply be inhaled to prevent the patient being at risk,' added Jacqui.

Jacqui works with leukaemia patients at the Christie Hospital using essential oils to help in their treatment. Patients receiving treatment for cancer and leukaemia are often left with weakened immune systems which makes them vulnerable to infection from MRSA.

The National Audit Office estimates that infections such as MRSA kill 5,000 people each year and hospital-acquired infections cost the NHS around Ł1 billion a year.

posted by Marybeth Wells on 16 Apr 2012 at 9:58 am

I always take my oils with me! When I travel is when I need them most...especially On Guard to use on the plane due to the poor air quality on the flight...I use it as a preventative under my nose for the air I breathe in... the TSA is gracious when I take them ...

My understanding is that some of the oils that eradicate MRSA are lemongrass, RC, and Thieves.

Oregano essential oil

posted by Matt Maier on 11 Dec 2007 at 4:36 am

Oregano essential oil cured two problems I had that seemed intractable. An infection and wound on my toe improved gratly with application of the oil. I was interested in other brands of grade A oils, as I suspect Young Living is overpriced. Does anyone else make diffusers?

I wanted to know if essential oils can help someone who has had a stroke. I received a message about someone whose father is hospitalized with a stroke and pronounced incurable. Would oils such as lavender improve the condition? I am hesitant to offer suggestions to him that might engender false hope. But I know essential oils, magnetic therapy and electricifying can have positive effects.

Thankyou

There are essential oils available that are cheaper than Young Living that are absolutely therapeutic grade. I was trained by ISHA in clinical aromatherapy and am a certified clinical aromatherapist with more than 10 yrs experience in essential oils and their uses also a memeber of NAHA. Check around and ask questions. Price is not necessarily indicative of quality and Young Living is excellent but over priced.
email me for more information and clinical advice/guidence.

posted by Nicole Jones on 7 Nov 2007 at 11:53 am

I don't know if you have heard of young living essential oils. get in touch with me and I will tell you more but for starters I will tell you this, you will need pure therapeutic grade essential oils. there have been studies that prove Melaleuca, Lavender, Peppermint, and Thyme essential oils have the strongest killing power against both MRSA and VRE antibiotic-resistant bacteria according to Western Infirmary @ Glasgow, UK.

Oil cure

posted by Melanie on 14 Jun 2006 at 12:11 pm

I suffer from MRSA infections frequently, I have had 4 in the past year. Therefore, I am very concerned about the fact that eventually my infection will resist the antibiotic. I would be thrilled if conventional doctors would ever allow a natural cure to be used for MRSA. But let's be real, it wouldn't bring them or the drug companies enough money to feed their greed. I do know one thing however. I found a site which I belive told me exactly which three oils these are (Lavendar, tea tree oil, and eucalyptus) and I am now going to use them for my own MRSA infections.

essential oils

Natural health providers have known this for years. Too bad pharmaceudical companies aren't interested in helping people unless they can patent a drug. Then they lobby against natural cures.
