Ontario's Registered Dietitians and their colleagues across the country are celebrating the first Dietitians Day. Dietitians of Canada (DC) designates each March as National Nutrition Month, and Dietitians Day celebrates the professionals who bring nutrition to the public. "Ontario's Registered Dietitians are a valuable resource for people of this province who are seeking healthy eating information and advice. To help mark Nutrition Month and celebrate the occasion of the first annual Dietitians Day, I offer my congratulations and thank Dietitians of Canada for our partnership with EatRight Ontario, which provides Ontarians with free access to Registered Dietitians via phone or email," says Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion. There are three easy ways to reach a Registered Dietitian at EatRight Ontario:
1. Call the toll-free number: 1-877-510-510-2 from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, with evening hours Tuesday and Thursday to 9pm.
2. Email the service at http://www.ontario.ca/eatright and receive a personal reply from a Registered Dietitian.
3. Visit the website for articles, menus and recipes at http://www.ontario.ca/eatright
Linda Dietrich, Regional Executive Director with DC, explains that "dietitians are uniquely trained to advise on food, nutrition, and healthy eating. Rigorous education and practical training requirements ensure that consumers benefit from dietitians' ability to translate complex nutrition science into practical healthy eating advice." Dietrich reminds consumers that "the title dietitian is protected by law; dietitians are regulated health professionals in Ontario, and must meet high standards for patient care to maintain registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario." Dietitians practice in many settings, including hospitals, long term care homes, family health teams, and community health centres. Dietitians also work in public health, food industry, research settings, and private practice. "Registered Dietitians play an important role throughout Ontario's health care system. Our government has recently expanded their scope of practice to better utilize the knowledge and skills dietitians have to offer Ontarians. I would like to thank dietitians from across Ontario for their hard work and dedication," says Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.
