The American Diabetes Association issues the following statement on the health reform bill passing in the U.S. House of Representatives today.
"Today is a day for celebration for the 23.6 million American children and adults who are living with diabetes. The passage of health reform by the House of Representatives finally tears down the wall that keeps people with diabetes from the health care they need," commented Nash Childs, PE, Chair of the Board, American Diabetes Association.
"With the passage of health reform 'just because you have diabetes' will no longer be a lawful excuse to deny coverage, to charge exorbitant rates, or to take away care just when a person with diabetes needs it most. It gives all Americans with diabetes a fighting chance at controlling this devastating disease before they face blindness, amputation, heart disease, and kidney failure.
"The bill is also an essential step in the fight to stop diabetes through primary prevention using the tools we know can make a difference for the 57 million Americans with pre-diabetes and the one in three children who will end up with diabetes if our nation doesn't change course. "We thank the House of Representatives for their success in passing meaningful health care reform."

Still A Horrible Response - husband of a Type 1 Diabetic
posted by The husband of a Type 1 Diabetic on 22 Mar 2010 at 7:40 amAs if living with Type 1 isn't horrific enough, the American Diabetes Association - of all groups should know better - has to include the following in their press release:
It gives all Americans with diabetes a fighting chance at controlling this devastating disease before they face blindness, amputation, heart disease, and kidney failure.
Yes, it is great the health reform bill has included measures for all individuals with health problems, but this sentence essentially gives up all hope for a healthy and "normal" life - "fighting chance" but still "before" all of these horrific consequences. What hope or promise does that give people? What good is a fighting chance at controlling the disease if it will leave you a blind amputee hooked up to dialysis? Why did that part have to be included? Yes, it is a grim future of this disease, but why not stay positive just for a minute? Why say all of these great things, only to end with such devastating and traumatic consequences?
My wife has had Type 1 for 23 years. She's known nothing else. She does everything she can to control it - wears a pump, visits her endo every 3 months, measures everything, counts all carbs, exercises daily at the same time, reworked her life and schedule to accommodate the highs and lows - but yet it has it's way with her body. Not only does it completely run her life, but now it has taken away her dreams of her intended career, robbed her of a majority of her sight, left her unable to drive in anything but daylight, and made each day just a little more difficult to get out of bed. And now this article - it starts off with hope and promise and good news that the health bill will make life better, only to end with fear and horror.
I only hope that one of these days people realize that REAL PEOPLE are struggling with this disease every day of their lives and to have the consequences continuously thrown in their face does not help in the least bit. Every diabetic and the people that love them know what can happen - being reminded of it is simply not needed. Life is hard enough. The fear of the future is hard enough. Day to day living is hard enough.
